Hello Happy Valentine's Day and welcome to the February edition of The Peaceful Runner Newsletter - your free monthly resource for inspirational articles and quotes, healthy recipes and the latest news and trends in running. In this issue: 1) Quote of the month Quote of the Month: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." -- Mahatma Gandhi My New Running ClubDo you belong to a running group or running club? It can be one of the best ways to stay motivated to run, not to mention the other awesome benefit of meeting wonderful, positive and inspirational people. Last night I decided to give my local running club a try. I am new in this area and I wanted to meet some new running friends. I always considered myself to be a "middle-of-the-road" runner--not too fast or not too slow. Well, last night I got knocked off my pedestal as I was the slowest runner in this group. I am amazed at the running caliber of this group. The running groups that I have run with previously had a mixture of beginner runners, fast runners and a whole bunch of everything in-between. All the members of my new running club are fast runners in my opinion. Last night was their monthly handicap race, whereby each runner is given a start time based on the completion time of their last handicap race, with yours truly starting out first and finishing last. It was a short (5.6 kms), fast-paced race with a difficult route that included two challenging hills. The goal of doing the race is to improve your finishing time each month during the year and last night was the first one of this year. I can only get better--I hope! Anyway, I am not discouraged, but encouraged that my new running club will help me become a stronger and faster runner. I have heard it said many times, "the best way to run faster is to run with faster runners." So that is my plan. I will run with these runners even if I stay at the back of the pack. After all, it is really only ourselves that we are competing with as it is only ourselves that we can improve.
